Organic Farming and Health: An Inspiring

In a special episode of Revelations, the program hosted Dr. Daniel Baisie Jr., an organic farming specialist and soil scientist, in a deep discussion about the vital connection between food, health, and spirituality. The conversation also addressed the current state of food production in Ghana and Africa.

The Problem with Modern Food

Dr. Baisie highlighted that today’s food system poses serious risks to human health. Most vegetables, fruits, and grains available on the market — estimated at 85-90% — lack their natural and nutritional properties. He pointed out that consumers are often attracted to the appearance, smell, and taste of food, while its true nutritional value is neglected.

The Role of Consumers in Change

The discussion emphasized that consumer awareness can transform the entire food supply chain. By asking questions about where and how food is grown, consumers can drive demand for organically produced food, encouraging farmers and traders to adapt.

Five Key Steps to Transform the Food System

Dr. Baisie proposed five main structures to improve Africa’s food system and ensure healthier diets:

  1. Seed Sovereignty: Establishing a national seed bank to preserve and protect local varieties.

  2. Decoupling Agriculture from Politics: Reducing political interference and dependence on harmful imported inputs such as synthetic herbicides.

  3. Nationwide Education on Healthy Eating: Using media and public campaigns to raise awareness across all communities, including rural areas.

  4. Promoting Peri-Urban Agriculture: Developing farming activities in peri-urban areas to shorten the food chain and make fresh produce more accessible.

  5. Transitioning to Organic Farming: Returning to natural agricultural practices for both tree crops and vegetables to safeguard human health and protect the environment.
